Sylvester Murray is the founder and technical director of Hall of Fame Basketball Academy.  Coach Sly first used basketball to engage his first child, Malachi in 2009. He started the first basketball club in Bradford, as president made it the largest basketball organization in the region.  The summer of 2015 he partnered with his childhood friend Shaun Cross to host the first Hall of Fame Basketball Academy Summer Camp. The camps  grew into spring/summer travel teams and then merged into full year training academy.  He then put all extra time into the academy.  Now, the academy is a one stop place for all elementary aged (Grades 2-8) to be introduced and grow in the game of basketball.  We have a dynamic recreational house league called the HBL (Hustle Basketball League) and we have produced some of the most elite teams in the province with our travel teams called the Hall of Fame Hustle.

Sylvester has been a child/youth worker for 15 years, leading the academy allows him to merge two of his passions. One teaching, guiding and mentoring young people and second, the game he has been passionate about since 11 years old. Unlike his partner Shaun Cross, his playing career was limited to just high school basketball. Being undersized a young Sly relied on quickness, technique and team strategies/concepts to be successful at the secondary school level.  Lacking the body type and natural talent, he used his basketball IQ,  stamina, work ethic and hustle to be solid player.

Coach Sly learned to communicate and inspire young people to embrace the attributes he was strong in. At HOFBA  he learned to transfer and empower these attributes to young people who have the body type, talent and drive and can make them elite athletes and if they don’t become elite… they will become infected with Sylvester’s joy and passion for young people and basketball. Along with coaching youth basketball for the last 12 years, Sylvester has been reffing with OABO (Ontario Association of Basketball Officials) for 6 years.  Sylvester has engaged as a player, coach, builder, and official and he mentors parents into becoming competent coaches, understanding all aspects of training youth to reach their highest potential.
